LONG BEACH, Calif. — Cal Poly senior Kendra Bonsall scored for the second time in three games Thursday night, and freshman goalkeeper Sophia Brown made seven saves, but the Long Beach State women's soccer team broke a tie midway through the second half for a 2-1 home win at Allen Field.
Bonsall also accounted for the Mustangs' first and second shots on goal for the evening, forcing saves by LBSU's Ashton McKeown nine and 13 minutes in.
Then in the 14th minute, junior Gianna Rosati headed a corner kick from sophomore Stephanie Magellan, but it went high. Sophomore Ashley Kirchick also tested McKeown with a 15th-minute shot on frame.
Brown stepped in front of a 25th-minute shot by Tori Bolden to keep the match scoreless, but the 49ers seized the lead six minutes later, when Ashley Gonzales tallied her seventh goal of the season on an assist from Alyssa Alvarez.
The Mustangs (6-7-1, 1-2-0 Big West Conference) came back with a 40th-minute shot (high) from freshman Megan Demijohn.
Shortly afterward in the 42nd, the equalizing sequence was triggered with a corner by Demijohn, leading to a 43rd-minute shot from sophomore Chelsea Barry that was blocked. Bonsall, however, was there for the rebound to make it 1-1.
Brown denied a 51st-minute attempt by Rocio Rodriguez, but LBSU (6-5-2, 2-0-1), which was ranked as high as No. 18 earlier this fall, tallied in the 59th when Mimi Rangel scored off a pass from Kaitlin Fregulia via a Chloe Froment corner kick.
Barry placed another shot on target in the 63rd minute, and Bonsall tried a header in the 72nd, but McKeown was there to stave off both chances. Brown also made four more saves the rest of the way (on 71', back-to-back stops on 76' vs. Rangel and Gonzales again, and 82').
Senior Nicole Wheeler and freshman Jordan Patane (off a corner from sophomore Kelly Kessloff) also shot in the 86th and 87th minutes (each wide).
It was the sixth career goal for Bonsall, who with 56 starts since 2013 is now only one away from joining the top 25 in the school record book. Her other goal this season came in the 2-1 win over Hawai'i on Sept. 30.
The Mustangs will return to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to host CSUN at 12 noon Sunday. It'll also be Pups at the Pitch Day, as fans with dogs are welcomed and receive discounted tickets for $5 by using the online promo code: DogDay
