SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Megan Demijohn scored a golden goal in the 95th minute Friday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, lifting the Cal Poly women's soccer team to an overtime win in its 2016 home opener, 2-1 over San Francisco.
The Mustangs controlled possession throughout the extra period, earning two corner kicks and taking two shots before the dramatic sudden-death sequence.
A little more than four minutes into OT, Ashley Kirchick chased down a ball along the right flank and passed ahead to fellow sophomore forward Caitlyn Kreutz. Kreutz, only a few steps removed from the end line, sent a perfectly placed cross in to Demijohn, who ran onto the centered ball eight yards out to fire a left-footed shot beyond the diving reach of Dons goalkeeper Makayla Presgrave.
It was the first collegiate goal for Demijohn, who had also ricocheted off the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
Kreutz got Cal Poly (2-1) out to a 1-0 lead, tapping in a 52nd-minute rebound of a Stephanie Magellan shot in front of the left post for her second tally of the young season and ninth of her career.
The Dons would equalize in the 60th minute, when Amanda Whittle buried a strike from atop the penalty area for her third score this fall.
The Mustangs, however, were knocking on the door with nine other shots on target for the evening – with two more coming from Demijohn (on 61' and 74'), two apiece by Magellan (the aforementioned try on 52' and then 53' — the latter of which was a header) and Jessica Johnson (72' and 92'), one more from Kreutz (5'), and one each by Macy Vrabel (54') and Kendra Bonsall (51').
Meanwhile in her third start, freshman goalkeeper Sophia Brown — the most recent Big West Conference Player of the Week — stepped in front of a 61st-minute attempt by former Germany U-19 squad member Sonja Giraud to keep the match level.
Cal Poly had a 6-2 advantage in corners while improving to 134-57-16 all-time at home.
The Mustangs will take on another WCC opponent Sunday, returning to face Saint Mary's at 12 noon.
