Mustang Men's Tennis Falls to No. 12 USC 4-3

LOS ANGELES – The Cal Poly men's tennis team put up a fight against No. 12 USC Thursday afternoon, pushing the Trojans until the end but coming up short, 4-3 at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles Calif.
The No. 33 Mustangs started the match off on a strong note, as Garrett Auproux and Josh Ortlip beat Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede in court three 6-3.
The No. 35 ranked doubles tandem of Ben Donovan and Corey Pang took on the ranked No. 29 doubles team of Brandon Holt and Riley Smith on court one but fell 6-3.
With court two needed to clinch the doubles point, Karl Enander and Tim Tan took on the No. 60 doubles team of Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven and came out with a 6-4 win, giving the Mustangs the doubles point.
Up 1-0, the Mustangs went into singles play where Antoine Noel was defeated by Riley Smith 6-2, 6-3 on court five, while Axel Damiens was beat by Bellamy on court six 6-1, 7-5.
Auproux put the Mustangs first singles point on the board after he beat Thibault Forget 7-6, 6-3 on court three, tying up the score 2-2.
Cal Poly Coca-Cola Student Athlete of the Week, No. 57 Donovan took on No. 27 Holt and lost 6-3, 6-4 on court one.
Ortlip put up a fight against Jaede on court four, but fell after pushing his second set to a tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6(2), clinching the match for the Trojans.
Pang, the Big West's Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week finished the match on a strong note, as he beat No. 42 Logan Smith on court two 7-5, 6-4.
Today's match was the Mustangs' best showing ever against the Trojans. The team is now 5-3 on the season.
Cal Poly will be back on the courts on Sunday to host No. 9 Michigan at 1:30 p.m., after the women's match against CSUN at 10 a.m. Pizza will be given to all of the fans in attendance.
