Cal Poly Edged in Thursday Matchup at Air Force, 2-1
9/2/2021 8:06:00 PM | Women's Soccer
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore forward Nikki Trucco's team-leading third goal of the season provided the Cal Poly women's soccer program an early lead versus Air Force Thursday evening, but the Falcons replied with goals in the 17th and 40th minutes and held on for a 2-1 victory.
Facing Air Force (1-1-1) for just the third time in program history, Cal Poly (2-3-0) chalked up its lone goal just five-and-a-half minutes after kickoff as Trucco (above) followed a rebounded effort from junior forward Brooke Rubenstein with a shot past Falcons goalkeeper Cammi Bych.
The Falcons forced Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Ava Dorvillier into the first of her four saves just 23 seconds after the restart before defender Kayla Milford tied the matchup in the 17th following a pass from defender Hannah Johnson.
Air Force tested Dorvillier three more times before defender Ashlie Van Cleave broke through with the eventual game-winning goal five minutes before the break.
Into the second half, Cal Poly saw four shots on target turned away with reigning Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week honoree Kylie Rojas stopped twice.
Cal Poly, which outshot Air Force, 18-10, but placed just six attempts on target, was whistled offside nine times.
The Mustangs close their two-game road trip on Sunday, Sept. 5 with an 11 a.m. PT matchup at Colorado College.
