Wick, Truax Win as Cal Poly Falls to Stanford in Pac-12 Dual Meet

STANFORD, Calif. -- Evan Wick won his showdown match against Shane Griffith and Bernie Truax breezed to victory as well, but No. 14 Cal Poly dropped a 23-14 decision to 16th-ranked Stanford in a Pac-12 dual wrestling meet Saturday inside Burnham Pavilion.
Wick, ranked No. 1 at 165 pounds, defeated third-ranked and defending 165-pound national champion Shane Griffith for the second time this season, this time in a 6-1 decision. The two also met in the finals of the Las Vegas Invitational in early December, which Wick won 6-2.
Wick, who on Saturday scored a takedown in the first period and, after a scoreless second period, an escape, takedown and riding time in the final period, improved to 16-0 for the season. Griffith is now 13-3.
Truax, ranked No. 5 at 184 pounds, earned his 13th victory in 14 matches Saturday with a 17-3 major decision over Nick Addison. Truax carded five takedowns, a two-point near-fall, four penalty points and riding time.
Cal Poly's other wins were a 7-4 decision by Samuel Aguilar at 285 and a 14-5 major decision by No. 28 Antonio Lorenzo against Suhas Chundi at 125.
Aguilar evened his record for the year at 8-8 while Lorenzo, who also notched a 5-0 decision against Chundi in an extra-countable match, raised his mark to 17-7.
Despite the loss, Cal Poly (4-3) finished the dual meet portion of its 2021-22 schedule with its first winning record since the 2010-11 season. Stanford improved to 5-3 entering Sunday's match against Oregon State.
Cal Poly will compete in the 2022 Pac-12 Championships on Sunday, March 6, at Arizona State.
