VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly erupted for five runs on six hits and a sacrifice fly in the second inning and Kaden Sheedy and Kyle Scott combined on a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Mustangs defeated Washington 5-1 in the finale of a season-opening three-game non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs (1-2) salvaged a win in the series against the Pac-12 Huskies (2-1) with a season-high 11-hit offensive attack and the efforts of Sheedy (1-0) and Scott (first save) on the mound. Cal Poly also played errorless defense for the second straight day.
Sheedy struck out five over five innings for the win, allowing the lone Washington run on a home run by first baseman Will Simpson, his second of the series, with two outs in the third inning. Scott tossed four scoreless, hitless frames with six strikeouts for the save.
Fifth-year senior third baseman Tate Samuelson ignited the second-inning Mustang uprising with a single to left field. Redshirt freshman right fielder Matthias Haas followed with an infield single and both runners advanced into scoring position on a Husky throwing error.
Sophomore center fielder Reagan Doss singled through the hole on the left side of the Washington infield to score the first run of the game. Sophomore first baseman Joe Yorke's sacrifice fly to left made it 2-0.
Graduate left fielder John Lagattuta tripled down the right field line, sophomore second baseman Nick Marinconz singled up the middle and freshman catcher Ryan Stafford doubled to left-center field, all three hits knocking in a run for a 5-0 Cal Poly lead.
After Simpson's home run in the top of the third, both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way. Washington turned four double plays, thwarting several other Mustang scoring opportunities.
Scott retired 12 of the 13 Husky batters he faced, giving up only a one-out walk in the eighth inning. He retired the side in order three times.
Each of the nine spots in the batting order for Cal Poly produced at least one hit.
Doss and sophomore shortstop Brooks Lee each had two of Cal Poly's 11 hits. Simpson's home run and shortstop Cam Clayton's two out single in the second inning were the only Washington hits of the game.
Stafford was 5-for-11 in the series with three doubles while Doss went 4-for-10 with a double, triple and three RBIs. Samuelson was 4-for-12 while Marinconz, Haas and Lee each produced three hits. Cal Poly hit .292 in the series while holding Washington to a .238 mark.
The Mustangs conclude a season-opening four-game home stand Tuesday night, hosting Fresno State for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest. The Bulldogs (3-0) completed a three-game series sweep at home against UC Riverside on Sunday with a 5-1 victory.
