FULLERTON – Sophomore catcher Kai Barrett's second career home run provided the Cal Poly softball program a brief lead against No. 23 Arizona State Friday afternoon, but the Sun Devils broke a 4-4 deadlock with a five-run sixth inning as the Mustangs fell at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic, 9-4.
After Cal Poly stranded senior shortstop Maddie Amos in the top of the first inning, Arizona State grabbed a 2-0 lead during the bottom half as third baseman Cydney Sanders followed a one-out single by right fielder Yannira Acuña with a home run to left field.
Cal Poly, however, took control of the lead at the first opportunity as senior designated player Lily Amos drew a 10-pitch, leadoff walk before sophomore second baseman Xiara Diaz singled to center field. Arizona State starter Allison Royalty retired the next two Mustangs before Barrett (above) belted the third pitch she saw over the left field wall to hand Cal Poly a 3-2 advantage.
The lead was short-lived though as the Sun Devils took two more runs back in the bottom of the second with second baseman Halle Harger and Acuña suppling run-scoring hits.
Held hitless and to just one combined baserunner during the third and fourth innings, Cal Poly equalized in the top of the fifth as freshman left fielder Jessica Clements led off with a single, moved to second through a sacrifice from senior center fielder Noellah Ramos and scored following an Arizona State fielding error on a grounder by sophomore right fielder Juju Sargent.
Taking over for Cal Poly starting righthander Kate Judy with one out in the first, fellow freshman Paige Maier conceded hits in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but stranded three Sun Devils to keep the scoreline level at 4-4.
Arizona State, however, found the decisive runs in the sixth, first by a leadoff homer from left fielder Emily Cazares before Sanders hit a grand slam to complete the 9-4 scoreline.
Cal Poly enjoyed two of its seven hits in the top of the seventh, but left one of its six stranded baserunners on to close the matchup.
Cal Poly concludes Judi Garman Classic action on Saturday, March 5 with a 12 noon doubleheader against Penn and Fresno State.
