3-0 Lead Slips Away as Cal Poly Falls to UC Santa Barbara, 8-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly scored the first three runs but UC Santa Barbara tallied the last eight for an 8-3 victory and clinched the Big West Conference baseball series Saturday afternoon inside Baggett Stadium.
Ryan Stafford doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, Brett Borgogno singled up the middle in the second frame to drive in another run and Brooks Lee hit his eighth home run of the year in the third for a 3-0 Mustang lead.
UC Santa Barbara answered with two in the fourth, three in the sixth, a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth for its 29th win in 39 games this season. At 18-2, the Gauchos are 5.5 games ahead of second-place Cal Poly (24-18 overall) in the Big West.
Sophomore southpaw Michael Gutierrez (6-1) scattered five hits over 6 1/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Matt Ager secured the final five outs for his fourth save.
The loss was charged to Mustang junior lefty Travis Weston (3-3) as he gave up five runs and nine hits over six innings with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Derek True allowed just one earned run over three frames in relief.
UC Santa Barbara outhit Cal Poly 12-8, led by second baseman Nick Oakley with a double and two singles for three RBIs. Blake Klassen and Kyle Johnson both added two hits, Jordan Sprinkle produced a two-run double that turned the game around in the sixth inning and Gianni Bloom hit a solo home run in the game, giving him five hits for the season, all for extra bases (three home runs, a triple and a double).
Bloom entered the series hitting .067.
Lee added a single to his third-inning home run and now has 39 RBIs for the year. Joe Yorke added two hits while Stafford and Matthias Haas had doubles.
Cal Poly committed four errors in the game, resulting in half of UC Santa Barbara's runs being unearned. The Gauchos, who committed four errors in Friday's 11-inning 10-7 win, clinched a series win in San Luis Obispo for the first time since 2010.
The crowd of 3,032 is the fourth-largest in Baggett Stadium's 22-year history.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly senior right-hander Dylan Villalobos (0-2, 3.97 ERA) to face UC Santa Barbara freshman right-hander Ryan Gallagher (4-0, 2.90 ERA).
