2/10/2023 3:56:00 PM | Men's Tennis
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After playing its first four matches of the season away from San Luis Obispo, the Cal Poly men's tennis team got its eight-match homestand off to a strong start Friday with a 6-1 win over the University of San Francisco out at Mustang Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (2-3) started off the match by taking the doubles point over the Dons (1-4). The No. 3 pairing of junior Carter Crookston and redshirt junior Joe Leather, playing together for the first time, looked very comfortable playing together as they won their match 6-1 to kick things off. The Mustangs' No. 1 duo of junior Noah Berry and redshirt junior Colter Smith then clinched the doubles point after picking up a 6-4 victory to notch their third straight win.
In singles, Cal Poly won five of the six matches in straight sets. Redshirt junior Fernando Fonseca made quick work of USF's Nikola Kuraica, winning 6-2, 6-3. Playing at the No. 1 spot, Berry continued his impressive start to the season, beating Nil Giraldez 6-3, 6-2 to improve his record to 3-0 this year.
Leather later sealed the victory for the Mustangs after beating Stevie Gould at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-3. Continuing to play the match out, freshman Aaron Eliscu picked up the first singles win of his Mustang career after defeating Johan Garaped at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-2. Crookston earned Cal Poly's sixth point of the match by beating Davide Cortimiglia 6-0, 7-5.
The Mustangs will look to keep things rolling when they welcome Grand Canyon to Mustang Tennis Complex Sunday at 10 a.m.
