Mustangs Hand UC Davis Pair of 5-2 Sunday Defeats

DAVIS – Five unanswered runs highlighted by two-run doubles from freshman third baseman Mylina Garza and junior right fielder Juju Sargent (above) helped the Cal Poly softball program secure a 5-2, opening-game victory Sunday morning at UC Davis. Cal Poly also prevailed in game No. 2 by the same scoreline after overturning a first-inning deficit for a second time.
During Sunday's opening 5-2 victory, Cal Poly (17-22, 10-14) fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning after UC Davis first baseman Sarah Starks forced home center fielder Anna Dethlefson with a fielder's choice before designated player Delaney Diaz doubled the lead with a two-out single.
Offensively, Cal Poly was kept hitless by UC Davis starting righthander Taylor Fitzgerald (5-4) until sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements singled with two down in the third. The Mustangs, however, advanced just one baserunner into scoring position through the opening five innings.
Cal Poly, however, broke through against Fitzgerald in the top of the sixth as sophomore second baseman Caroline Allman followed walks from Clements and Sargent with a run-scoring single. Garza then produced her two-run double to hand Cal Poly a 3-2 advantage.
In the circle for Cal Poly, sophomore righthander Paige Maier (4-5) conceded solitary hits to UC Davis in the third, fourth and fifth innings with the Mustangs twice turning double plays to keep the Aggie lead a 2-0. Maier stranded two UC Davis baserunners to close the sixth before Sargent enjoyed her two-run double in the seventh to solidify the scoreline.
Maier, who walked just one, retired UC Davis in order during the seventh to complete Cal Poly's victory.
During Sunday's second 5-2 victory, Cal Poly found the game's opening run in the top of the first as Sargent singled home junior shortstop Xiara Diaz with two down. Starks, however, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning as UC Davis departed the first leading, 2-1.
Held hitless in the second, Cal Poly equalized during the third as Allman singled with two down to plate Diaz.
The Mustangs then surged ahead in the fifth with Clements doubling to lead off before advancing to third on a wild pitch by UC Davis starting righthander Kenedi Brown (15-9) and scoring through a Diaz sacrifice fly. Garza and sophomore catcher Barnett later added run-scoring hits to place the Mustangs up, 5-2.
Taking over for Mustang starting sophomore righthander Kate Judy with one down during the second, freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (11-12) struck out nine – one shy of her career high – in five and two-thirds innings. She also conceded just two hits and walked one to close out Cal Poly's victory.
