
Know the Foe: Portland State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly football is home for a second straight week this Saturday when hosting Portland State at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
This will be the first meeting against the Vikings since early in the 2023 season. While Portland State got the win in the last meeting, 59-21, The Mustangs lead the all-time series, 13-12, dating to the first meeting – a 29-22 Cal Poly road win – on September 10, 1977.
Portland State comes into Saturday’s game seeking their first win of the season, coming in at 0-8 on the year. They are coming off a 45-6 loss to Idaho this past Saturday on the road. Statistically, the Vikings rank last in the Big Sky in both scoring on offense and points allowed on defense.
Last season, Portland State was 3-8 overall, 3-5 in Big Sky play. They are led by head coach Bruce Barnum, who is in his 11th season as head coach.
For Saturday’s game, the first 5,000 fans will receive a Cal Poly rally towel upon entry to the game. Also new this year for students is the chance to win one quarter of in-state tuition. Each of the first 2,500 students to arrive will receive a raffle ticket to enter to win. The winner will be announced after the third quarter ends.
