ATHERTON, Calif. — Redshirt freshman Anthony Berg and freshman Levi Bussey both won titles in their respective weight classes to highlight a strong showing by the Cal Poly wrestling team at the Menlo Open on Saturday inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
A total of 11 Mustangs took part in the tournament while the rest of the team was in San Luis Obispo on Saturday night for Cal Poly’s season-opening dual against Purdue inside Mott Athletics Center.
Berg and Bussey led the way as both steamrolled through their weight classes with perfect 4-0 records.
Bussey earned a pair of victories by technical fall in his first two matches at 197 pounds before facing off against teammate Tyler Hodges in the semifinals where he secured a narrow 2-1 win by decision. In the 197-pound championship match, Bussey took down teammate Wesley Wilson via major decision, 11-2.
Berg picked up a technical fall victory and pair of wins by decision to punch his ticket to the 157-pound title match, where he secured a 23-12 major decision over San Francisco State’s Basil Othman.
On top of Wilson taking second at 197, three other Mustangs placed second in their respective weight classes at the tourney — freshman Caleb Rivas (125), freshman Leo Macias (133) and redshirt freshman Ryan Clink (184). Freshmen Christian Garcia (125) and Anthony Vargas (157) both earned fourth-place finishes.
Cal Poly returns to action on Friday, Nov. 14, to host Pac-12 rival Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
