SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly football opened its 2025 training camp Thursday morning at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by Dignity Health French Hospital at Spanos Stadium as they set sail on getting ready for a new season.
Thursday marked the first of 20 training camp practices the Mustangs will have before the first game week of the year. Practices during camp will typically take place Monday-Saturday from 9-11 a.m.
A few interesting dates for fans to mark are Aug. 16 when the annual Kids Huddle event from 10-11:30 a.m. The other is a scrimmage on the final day of training camp Aug. 22 from 2:30-4 p.m. at Mustang Memorial Field.
This season, Cal Poly has 77 returning players from last year’s roster and 42 newcomers. Those newcomers consist of 17 transfers and 25 freshmen. Among those newcomers are three quarterbacks, seven defensive backs, seven defensive linemen, three linebackers, 10 offensive linemen, one running back, one safety, three tight ends, and nine wide receivers.

There are nine combined consistent starters back on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Among the newcomers back are Big Sky All-Conference honorees in safety Mason Rivera and defensive lineman Ethan Rodriguez. On the offensive side, the Mustangs’ second and third leading wide receivers are back in Michael Briscoe and Logan Booher, who combined for 885 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2024.
“For the first time in a long time, we won’t be the youngest team every Saturday which has been an issue for us in past years,” Wulff said. “Now we have some more veteran players playing throughout the roster and it’s going to help us.”
After several months of a revamped weight training program and all the additions, the Mustangs are as strong and as deep at multiple positions as they’ve been under third year head coach Paul Wulff.
“We’re a deeper, stronger football team across the board which we anticipated,” Wulff said following day one of camp Thursday. “It’s been exciting to see the growth of the program on the first day. We have a lot of work to do but the talent is deeper than it’s ever been.”
Among the positions of note to watch shake out is the quarterback position which is a battle between several guys. The Mustangs have brought back three quarterbacks that played last season in Jackson Akins, Bo Kelly, and Lucas Razore. While Richie Watts moved from quarterback to linebacker, they brought in two transfers in Ty Dieffenbach from Pittsburgh and Anthony Grigsby Jr. from Nevada.
“We have four veteran guys at the quarterback position that have experience that gives us a healthy competition,” Wulff said of the quarterback battle. “I just know they’re competing hard, they’re good young men, they’re talented and they’re going to prove it over the next few weeks of camp.”
Cal Poly will open the season Aug. 30 on the road at San Diego as part of their 12-game schedule. The home opener will take place week three against Western Oregon Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. Season tickets for all five home games are on sale now with single game tickets going on sale Aug. 1 at 10 a.m.
