SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Freshman southpaw Matt Imhof pitched five shutout innings and freshman outfielder Nick Torres drove in three runs as Cal Poly defeated its alumni 14-3 in the annual Alumni Game on Saturday at Baggett Stadium.
Imhof scattered two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four. Four Mustang relievers each pitched an inning, junior Nick Grim closing out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Torres drove in his three runs with a triple, groundout and a ninth-inning solo home run.
First baseman/designated hitter Jordan Brower singled three times while designated hitter Alex Michaels, outfielder Matt Russell and outfielder Tim Wise each added two hits as the Mustangs outhit the Alumni 22-5.
Phil Ortez got the Alumni on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with a two-run home run. David Van Ostrand contributed an RBI double in the eighth frame. Singles were earned by Brandon Roberts, Ryan Lee and Steve Rohlmeier.
The Alumni used nine pitchers, each for an inning. Pitching scoreless frames were Matt Leonard, Brian Grening, Eric Massingham and Grant Theophilus.
Cal Poly opens the 2012 season next weekend with a three-game home series against Oklahoma State in Baggett Stadium. Games Friday and Saturday nights start at 6 p.m., followed by the series finale Sunday at 1 o'clock.
