Cal Poly Baseball Clinches Oklahoma State Series With 11-3 Victory
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior shortstop Mike Miller drove in two runs with three hits and senior southpaw Kyle Anderson allowed just one earned run in 3 2/3 innings of relief for the win as Cal Poly clinched its season-opening baseball series against Oklahoma State with an 11-3 victory Saturday night before 1,388 in Baggett Stadium.
Miller (pictured at right) tripled in the first inning, singled in the fourth and doubled to drive in two runs in a six-run fifth-inning rally as the Mustangs have posted their first 2-0 start to a season since sweeping Fresno State in the opening series of the 2006 season.
Oklahoma State, despite collecting 10 hits, fell to 0-2.
Anderson (1-0) struck out three and did not walk a batter, scattering four hits in relief of starter Matt Imhof. The freshman southpaw also allowed just one earned run and four hits in 3 1/3 innings with two walks and four strikeouts in his first collegiate start.
The loss went to Oklahoma State senior left-hander Kyle Ottoson (0-1), a transfer from Arizona State who allowed six runs (four earned) and eight hits in four-plus innings. Ottoson struck out three and walked three.
Cal Poly's 11-hit offensive attack was paced by Miller's three hits. Sophomore catcher Chris Hoo added two hits, including a two-run double to ignite the fifth-inning Mustang uprising. Freshman right fielder Nick Torres and sophomore third baseman Jimmy Allen each added a double.
Second baseman Robbie Rea had three hits, including a double, to lead the Cowboys at the plate. Third baseman Mark Ginther and catcher Victor Romero each added two hits for Oklahoma State, which swept Cal Poly in a three-game series a year ago at Stillwater, Okla.
Cal Poly scored twice in the first inning and never trailed for the second straight night. Junior center fielder Mitch Haniger's sacrifice fly tallied the first run and a Cowboy throwing error allowed the second run to score.
After Oklahoma State scored in the top of the third on Rea's RBI double, Cal Poly answered in the bottom of the fourth on a pinch-hit RBI single by sophomore Tim Wise for a 3-1 lead.
The Mustangs broke the game open in the fifth. After Hoo's two-run double, he scored on a balk. Miller doubled home two more and Haniger's second sacrifice fly of the game capped the rally.
Cal Poly added single runs in the sixth and seventh frames. Allen's doubled tallied the run in the sixth and the Mustangs scored their final run on Haniger's double play grounder in the seventh.
The Cowboys scored twice in the top of the seventh on an RBI single to center field by shortstop Hunter Bailey and a Mustang error in the infield.
Six of Cal Poly's 11 runs were unearned as a result of five Oklahoma State errors.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock in Baggett Stadium, with Cal Poly starting junior right-hander Kyle Brueggemann, a transfer from Army (freshman year) and College of Sequoias (sophomore year), on the mound. Junior right-hander Randy McCurry will start for Oklahoma State.
