Wagman, Allen Lead Cal Poly Baseball to 9-1 Victory over Loyola Marymount
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Junior right-hander Joey Wagman picked up his second win, allowing one run and three hits in seven innings, and Jimmy Allen belted a two-run home run as Cal Poly defeated Loyola Marymount 9-1 in the opener of a four-game non-conference baseball series Friday afternoon at George C. Page Stadium.
Wagman, who pitched eight scoreless innings for the win last Friday against Oklahoma State, did not allow his first run of the season until the sixth inning against Loyola Marymount. He struck out four and walked three, throwing 88 pitches.
Wagman (pictured at right) has allowed just one run and five hits in 15 innings so far this season.
Cal Poly (4-1) scored three runs on four hits in the first five innings for a 3-0 lead, then exploded for five runs on seven hits in the sixth and seventh frames to win going away.
Loyola Marymount (2-2) scored its lone run in the sixth inning after falling behind 4-0.
Allen singled twice, scored twice and capped his second career three-hit game with a two-run home run to left field in the seventh inning, giving Cal Poly an 8-1 lead.
Center fielder Zac Fujimoto, the No. 9 batter in Loyola Marymount's lineup, collected two of his team's three hits.
Losing pitcher Colin Welmon (0-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
The Mustangs added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Haniger's third sacrifice fly and Miller's RBI single, respectively.
Cal Poly broke the game open in the seventh with four runs. Freshman first baseman Ryan Drobny singled to knock in the first run, a throwing error allowed the second run to score and Allen capped the rally with his second career home run.
Cal Poly's final run came in the ninth on Ellis' first career collegiate hit, an RBI double into the right-field corner.
The Mustangs played errorless defense for the first time this season. Cal Poly had committed one error in each of its first four games of the year.
The two teams will play a 10 a.m. doubleheader Saturday. Cal Poly will send senior southpaw Kyle Anderson (1-0, 2.45 ERA) and freshman right-hander Matt Imhof (0-0, 2.70 ERA) to the mound against Loyola Marymount right-hander Trevor Megill (0-1, 1.50 ERA) and right-hander Aaron Griffin (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
