San Diego State Rallies to Beat No. 22 Cal Poly Baseball, 4-3
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Right fielder Greg Allen singled up the middle to drive in the winning run in the ninth inning as San Diego State rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the final two frames to beat No. 22 Cal Poly 4-3 on the opening day of play in the Aztec Invitational on Thursday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Mustang sophomore right-hander Chase Johnson worked his way out of a bases-loaded nobody-out jam in the eighth inning after the Aztecs (4-6) had tied the game with two runs, but couldn't quiet the Aztec bats in the ninth as Cal Poly fell to 7-2 on the year.
A sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Chris Hoo in the second inning tied the game at 1-1 and redshirt freshman first baseman Jordan Brower gave Cal Poly a 2-1 lead in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle.
Cal Poly added an insurance run in the eighth as freshman right fielder Nick Torres scored from third base on a wild pitch.
The Mustangs, however, couldn't hold onto the 3-1 advantage as the Aztecs scored twice off junior right-hander Nick Grim in the bottom of the eighth and pushed across the winning run in the ninth.
Johnson relieved Grim after the Aztecs scored their two runs in the eighth and induced the first two batters to hit into force plays at the plate and struck out the third Aztec to end the inning.
The loss spoiled a brilliant pitching performance by Mustang senior southpaw Kyle Anderson (2-1), who allowed one unearned run and three hits in seven innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Torres (pictured above) and sophomore left fielder Tim Wise each had two of Cal Poly's seven hits. Both of Torres' hits were doubles.
Cal Poly will face the University of San Diego (6-3) on Friday at 11 a.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium with junior right-hander Joey Wagman on the mound for the Mustangs. San Diego fell 4-3 to Cal State Northridge on Thursday.
