Santa Clara Rallies for 11-6 Baseball Victory Over Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara erased a 6-1 deficit with two big rallies to beat Cal Poly 11-6 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.

The Broncos, 5-2 winners over the Mustangs two weeks ago in Baggett Stadium, win the season series with Tuesday's victory. Santa Clara, 17-34 a year ago, is off to a 10-3 start under new head coach Dan O'Brien.

Cal Poly fell to 9-4.

The Mustangs scored twice in the first, second and third frames for their 6-1 lead, but could muster just two hits the rest of the way.

Sophomore third baseman Jimmy Allen (pictured at right) had three of Cal Poly's eight hits, driving in one run. Freshman right fielder Nick Torres added a double and home run, his first as a Mustang, while sophomore left fielder David Armendariz also had two hits. Senior shortstop Mike Miller contributed one hit, his first collegiate home run, and a sacrifice fly for two RBI.

Santa Clara pounded out 18 hits, including a 4-for-5 performance by third baseman Matt Glomb. He drove in three runs while first baseman Andrew Biancardi and right fielder Lucas Herbst each added three hits, Herbst knocking in three runs.

Trailing 6-1, Santa Clara scored a run in the third inning, five more in the sixth and four unearned runs in the eighth to overcome the deficit.

Nick Grim, the third of five Cal Poly pitchers used in the midweek game, suffered the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year. The junior right-hander allowed three runs and three hits in one inning of work.

Southpaw Max Deering (1-0), the second of three Santa Clara pitchers, earned the win with three scoreless innings in relief of starter Chris Mendoza.

Cal Poly, which went 6-3 on its nine-game road trip, returns home to host Washington (9-3) for a three-game weekend series in Baggett Stadium. Games on Friday and Saturday nights start at 6 p.m., followed by the 1 p.m. series finale Sunday.
