SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- For the second straight week, Cal Poly sophomore outfielder David Armendariz has been named Big West Conference Field Player of the Week.
The Notre Dame High School (Sherman Oaks) graduate, who went 6-for-10 a week earlier, posted even more impressive numbers last week in Cal Poly's season-ending sweep of UC Riverside.
Armendariz, 6-1, 210, went 8-for-13 with eight RBI with three doubles, all in Saturday's 15-9 win, produced the game-winning RBI and run on Sunday with a leadoff home run in the second inning and scored five times in the series.
In his last seven games of the 2012 season, Armendariz was 14-for-23 with eight runs scored and 15 RBI, raising his batting average 38 points to .312.
Two weeks ago, Armendariz drove in seven runs and stole four bases in four baseball games, knocking in two game-winning runs during Cal Poly's only 4-0 week of the season -- one against CSU Bakersfield and three more against UC Santa Barbara. In addition to his six hits in the week, Armendariz also walked three times, laid down two sacrifice bunts and hit a sacrifice fly.
For the season, Armendariz hit .312 with 12 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 36 RBI. He led the Mustangs with 13 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
Armendariz is one of five Mustangs honored by the Big West this season, joining junior center fielder Mitch Haniger (Feb. 27, April 16), freshman right fielder Nick Torres (March 12), senior shortstop Mike Miller (March 26) and junior right-hander Joey Wagman (April 9).
The Big West pitcher of the week is Cal State Fullerton junior right-hander Dylan Floro, who tossed his third complete game, a six-hitter, en route to his 10th win of the season in a 4-0 victory over Long Beach State on Friday night.
