Cal Poly Men's Golf Finishes Ninth in Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. -- A final-round four-person 299 total dropped the Cal Poly men's golf team from sixth place to ninth at the SCVB Pacific Invitational on Wednesday at the Brookside Country Club.

Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs, who carded a 289 for 10th place and a 293 to move into sixth place Tuesday, finished with a 29-over-par 881 total for 54 holes, edging Brigham Young by one stroke for ninth place in the 12-team field.

Sophomore Justin Haley (pictured at right) had Cal Poly's best round Wednesday, finishing with an even-par 71 on the 6,757-yard course for a three-over-par 216 total and a tie for 12th place.

Scott Patterson also finished tied for 12th place following his final-round 77, dropping from his second-round fourth-place finish.

Other Cal Poly scores include a final-round 76 by Grant Martens for a 10-over-par 223 total and 38th place, a 75 by Chris Satterwhite for a 226 total and 45th place, and a 77 by Bryce Greeley for a 233 total and 55th place.

Individual winner was Kevin Lucas of Nevada with a six-under-par 207 total. He and runnerup Alex Moore of Oregon State (208) both carded final-round 70s. Lucas birdied the final hole to break the deadlock for the individual title and create the tie for the team crown. Alex Edfort of Pacific and Kirby Pettitt of Colorado State finished tied for third at 210.

Oregon State defeated Nevada in a playoff to capture the team title. Both finished with three-over-par 855 totals and both shot 280 Wednesday. All five golfers played the 18th hole with the top four scores counting. Oregon State was minus-4 and Nevada minus-2. Colorado State was third at 859.

Satterwhite finished tied for first in par-3 scoring with a minus-1 total while Haley was fourth in par-4 scoring at minus-2. No Mustang broke par in par-5 scoring. Martens was second in the field with his 39 pars and Patterson was fifth at 38. Haley also notched 10 birdies and an eagle.

Cal Poly concluded the fall season with the Pacific Invitational and returns to action Feb. 29-21 at the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton at the Industry Hills Golf Course in City of Industry, Calif.
