Martens Ties School Record With 64 in Final Round of Braveheart Classic


CALIMESA, Calif. – Junior Grant Martens tied a Cal Poly record with a round of 64 and jumped from 37th place into a tie for 11th place in the final round of the Braveheart Classic men's golf tournament Tuesday at the Oak Valley Golf Club.

Marten's eight-under-par round helped Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs climb from ninth place into a tie for eighth place with UC Riverside, both with 895 totals on the 7,003-yard par-72 course.

With his 64, Martens finished with a career-best one-under-par 215 total, five strokes behind individual winner Ji Hwan Park of San Francisco. Park posted a final-round 72 for his 210 total.

Brayden Eriksen carded a 73 for a 211 total and four golfers shared third place at 212.

Martens tied the Mustang mark set by Chris Kirk at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on April 2, 2007. He has two other career rounds in the 60s, carding a 68 earlier this season in the Folino Invitational and in October 2008 at the Coast BMW Intercollegiate.

Cal State Fullerton captured the team title with a final-round 286 for an 859 total, one stroke ahead of Sacramento State. San Francisco was another stroke back at 861.

Mustang Scott Patterson carded a final-round 73 for a 224 total and 28th place while Justin Haley posted a 76 for a 226 total and 34th place.

Rounding out Cal Poly's scoring were Bryce Greeley with a 77 for a 230 total and 47th place and Trevor Guthrie with a 79 for a 241 total and 63rd place.

Competing as an individual, Alex Romo finished tied for 41st place with a 228 total following a final-round 78.

Cal Poly returns to action April 29 through May 1 at the Big West Conference Championship, to be played at the PGA West Golf Club in La Quinta, Calif.
