Mustang Softball Closes San Diego Classic with 8-2 Victory versus Nevada

SANTEE, Calif. – Senior Nicole Lund laced a two-run double during the second inning and sophomores Kim Westlund (above) and Madi Vogelsang struck back-to-back home runs during the third to set the winning tone on Sunday morning as the Cal Poly softball team completed play at the San Diego State-hosted San Diego Classic with an 8-2 triumph against Nevada inside the Santee Sportsplex.

Retired in order during the top of the first, the Mustangs lashed out in the second as Vogelsang and sophomore shortstop Ashley Romano doubled in succession to open the inning before Lund drove home the pair with a double of her own to left field.

During the first meeting between the two programs since Cal Poly (6-9) knocked Nevada (5-15) out of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, Mustang junior righthander Rebecca Patton (4-5) allowed the first of Wolf Pack freshman catcher Ashley Butera's two solo home runs to lead off the bottom half of the second. The run, however, counted as the only blemish against Patton, who struck out three and scattered four hits. Freshman lefthander Chloe Wurst also struck out three Nevada hitters without a walk in three innings of relief work.

Leading 2-1, Cal Poly tacked on three runs during the third through Westlund's two-run shot to center field before Vogelsang pounded her third homer of the season to right field.

The Mustangs added a run during the fourth through sophomore left fielder Jillian Andersen's run-scoring base hit to plate sophomore catcher Mariah Cochiolo. Cal Poly capped its scoring during the fifth as junior pinch runner Whitley Gerhart reached home following a fielding error by Nevada freshman left fielder Molly McWilliams. Cochiolo then scored freshman second baseman Celina Lafrades with a single through the left side.

Cal Poly continues its six-tournament, pre-Big West Conference slate at the March 9-11 Stanford-hosted Louisville Slugger Classic. The Mustangs open tournament play on Friday, March 9 with a 9 a.m. doubleheader against Ole Miss and Colorado State.
