SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After posting a 0.79 ERA and earning two victories in three appearances at the March 3-5 San Diego Classic, Cal Poly softball junior righthander Rebecca Patton was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.
During Cal Poly's tournament opener at the Santee Sportsplex versus Charlotte on March 3, Patton (4-5) scattered four hits, struck out five batters and failed to yield an earned run in a complete-game victory as the Mustangs edged the 49ers, 3-2.
The following afternoon, Patton struck out six San Diego hitters, but Cal Poly conceded two runs during the bottom of the seventh inning against the Toreros and dropped a 2-1 decision.
Behind Patton, who struck out three Nevada hitters against one earned run, the Mustangs rebounded during Sunday's San Diego Classic finale to post an 8-2 victory against the Wolf Pack. After also defeating St. Joseph's, 6-4, on March 3, Cal Poly finished San Diego Classic play with a 3-2 mark.
Patton, who ranks third among Big West pitchers in victories and sixth with 39 strikeouts, also allowed just a .224 opposing batting average during her three appearances at the San Diego Classic.
Cal Poly (6-9) continues its six-tournament, pre-Big West slate at the March 9-11 Stanford-hosted Louisville Slugger Classic. The Mustangs open tournament play on Friday, March 9 with a 9 a.m. doubleheader against Ole Miss and Colorado State.
