SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Boris Novachkov and Ryan DesRoches solidified their top-five national rankings with decisions, but No. 18 Cal Poly dropped a 36-6 verdict to No. 13 Oregon State in a Pacific-12 Conference dual wrestling meet Sunday afternoon at Cuesta College.
Novachkov, ranked No. 5 at 141 pounds by InterMat, scored three near-fall points early in the third period for a 4-0 lead and held on for a 5-3 decision against No. 3 Michael Mangrum of Oregon State.
Novachkov is now 3-1 in his career against Mangrum. In last year's dual at Corvallis, Ore., Novachkov earned 1:30 of riding time for a 3-2 decision, and Mangrum's only win so far against the Mustang senior was a 4-3 decision in the semifinals of last weekend's Las Vegas Invitational en route to a first-place finish.
Novachkov (pictured at right) is now 11-2 on the year and Mangrum, suffering his first loss of the season, slipped to 14-1.
At 174, DesRoches moved to 12-0 for the season with a 4-0 decision against Ty Vinson. DesRoches entered the match No. 4 in the nation while Vinson was No. 19 with an 11-3 record.
After a scoreless first period, DesRoches scored an escape and takedown in the second period and rode Vinson out in the final period for a riding time point.
Oregon State won the remaining eight bouts, two by fall, three by major decision and one by forfeit.
In addition to 141 and 174, the dual meet also featured a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers at 285. Fourth-ranked Clayton Jack moved to 15-0 on the year with a 3-2 decision against No. 17 Atticus Disney. A takedown by Jack with 40 seconds remaining in the third period proved decisive.
Jack also beat Disney 6-2 in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Invitational en route to the title. Disney was a 12-6 winner over Jack in last year's dual meet, won by Cal Poly 18-15, snapping an 18-match losing streak against Oregon State and the Mustangs' first win over the Beavers since 1989.
Beaver 157-pounder RJ Pena, ranked No. 18, and 197-pounder Taylor Meeks, ranked No. 14, both won by fall while the major decisions were earned by 125-pounder Pat Rollins, 133-pounder Garrett Drucker and 149-pounder Scott Sakaguchi.
Mustang 184-pounder Sean Dougherty scored a pair of reversals, but John Tuck's two takedowns in the first period and a reversal of his own in the third period were enough in a 6-5 decision.
Oregon State, a 45-4 winner over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, improved to 4-1 in dual meets (3-0 Pac-12) while Cal Poly fell to 2-1 and 1-1. The Beavers and Mustangs met for the 49th time Sunday and Oregon State now holds a 36-11-2 advantage in the series.
Cal Poly returns to action next Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
