No. 16 Santa Clara Too Much for Mustangs

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's soccer team scored a single goal in the first half, but added two more in defeating Cal Poly 3-0 in a non-conference soccer game on Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

The Broncos totaled 20 shots, nine on goal while Cal Poly would manage three shots, two on goal.

Bianca Henninger earned the win for the Broncos with one save to improve to 3-0 on the season. She was lifted in the 77th minute and replaced by Molly Mettler who recorded a save. Booke Gauvin took the loss for the Mustangs with six saves and falls to 2-2 on the year.

In the first half Santa Clara controlled the game, keeping the ball in the Cal Poly half of the field for much of the first period.

The Broncos took 12 shots with five on goal. Cal Poly only managed one shot, coming from Lauren Heer when her shot went wide from 27 yards out.

Santa Clara scored the lone goal of the half when Julie Johnston placed a defected ball in the back of the net in the 13th minute. Her shot came from the right side from 13 yards out. 

The Mustangs came out more aggressive in the second period, but it was the Broncos that had the scoring opportunities with Sarah Jackson scoring in the 53rd minute. Jackson's shot came from the right side from 23 yards out off a feed from Jenny Laponte.

Santa Clara added its second goal of the half when Johnston scored her second goal of the game. Lauren Matheson split defenders on a pass from midfield. Johnson received the pass and beat the Cal Poly goalie one on one.

McKenzie Orand had an open shot from the PK line but Henninger stepped in to make the save. Tiffany Gummow shot was deflected high from 23 yards out.
