SCHEDULE UPDATE: Due to weather, Cal Poly's scheduled Sunday 10 a.m. matchup at San Jose State was cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
SANTA CLARA – Producing a six-run third inning that included a three-run homer from sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza, the Cal Poly softball program defeated Seattle for a second successive afternoon at the Silicon Valley Classic, topping the Redhawks at SCU Softball Stadium, 6-4.
Stranding five baserunners through the initial two innings, Cal Poly (7-2) took control of the matchup during the bottom half of the third as Garza followed back-to-back leadoff singles from senior shortstop Xiara Diaz and junior catcher Julia Barnett with her second career home run.
Sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard next drew a full-count walk before senior designated player Mia Perez (above) delivered a run-scoring base hit. Senior right fielder Juju Sargent and junior center fielder Jessica Clements later added RBI singles as Cal Poly departed the third inning with a 6-0 advantage.
In the circle for Cal Poly, junior righthander Paige Maier (3-0) kept Seattle (3-5) to just three hits through the opening five innings before the Redhawks pushed across three runs during the top half of the sixth. Seattle scored once more in the seventh against junior righthanded reliever Kate Judy, who preserved Cal Poly's lead and earned her first career save.
