SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard (above) drove home the Cal Poly softball program's lone run Sunday afternoon as the Mustangs – stranding seven baserunners – closed their three-game home series against Long Beach State with a 7-1 setback.
With Sunday's defeat, Cal Poly (22-14, 12-5) slipped one-and-a-half games behind second place Long Beach State (19-25, 14-4) in the Big West standings, but stayed just two-and-a-half back of leader Cal State Fullerton (15-3), which dropped its series finale at UC Santa Barbara earlier Sunday, 3-2.
With nine regular season games remaining, Cal Poly visits Cal State Fullerton for a three-game, April 27-28 series. Action at Anderson Family Field gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 27.
During Sunday's matchup, Long Beach State surged ahead at the first opportunity, loading the bases against Mustang starting righthander Sophia Ramuno (9-8) with one down in the first before designated player Jocylyn Vidal plated left fielder Sara Olson with a sacrifice fly. Catcher Rebekah Durazo then ran Long Beach State's lead to 3-0 with a two-run double to left center.
Cal Poly recorded its lone run at the first chance as Blanchard followed sophomore shortstop Xiara Diaz's one-out triple with a run-scoring double off the center field wall.
The Beach though furthered the advantage to 5-1 in the top half of the third with Durazo returning to belt a two-run homer over the left center field wall. Second baseman Jacquelyn Bickar then furthered the lead to 6-1 in the fourth with a bases-loaded fielder's choice that brought home pincher runner Jaeden Barajas. Long Beach State completed the scoring with single runs in the fifth and seventh.
Cal Poly's best opportunity to shorten its deficit occurred during the fifth as the Mustangs loaded the bags with one out. Long Beach State starting lefthander Sophia Fernandez (10-10), however, forced successive flyouts from junior catcher Julia Barnett and senior right fielder Juju Sargent.
