LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Cal Poly played its best round of the season Wednesday, jumping seven spots into a tie for 15th place in the final round of The Prestige men's golf tournament Wednesday on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West.
Led by Austin Liu's final-round 69, head coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs carded a four-person 287 total on the 7,100-yard, par-71 layout, climbing from 22nd place into a tie for 15th place with Nevada among 24 schools competing in the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Liu, who finished in sixth place in last week's Orange County Collegiate as an individual, solidified his place as one of the Mustangs' top five golfers with four birdies and a pair of bogeys for his 69 and a seven-over-par 220 total, good for a 53rd-place tie. Liu moved 35 spots up the ladder Wednesday.
Tanner Podres finished tied for 87th place with a 225 total while Joey Zambri and Will Draper shared 91st place with seven other golfers at 226. Zambri posted a 70 Wednesday with an eagle on the 537-yard par-5 16th hole along with two birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey.
Luke Adam recorded an even-par 71 for a 227 total and 100th place, carding three birdies and an equal number of bogeys.
Individual tri-champions were second-round leader Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech, Jacob Skov Olesen of TCU and Trevor Werbylo of Arizona, all with four-under-par 209 aggregates. Aberg birdied two of his final four holes to finish first and watched as Olesen and Werbylo both parred the final two holes to maintain the tie.
There also was a tie for the team title, shared by Arizona and North Carolina with four-under-par 848 totals. North Carolina carded a final-round 280 total, Arizona 285 and second-round leader Pepperdine 289 in settling for third place.
Meanwhile, at a companion tournament for individuals only at Coral Mountain, Cal Poly's Nicholas Mok posted a final-round 76 and finished tied for 14th place with four other golfers, all with two-under-par 214 totals on the 7,145-yard par-72 course.
