
Trio of Mustangs in Top Ten at Orange County Collegiate Classic

COTO DE CAZA, Calif. — First-year Cal Poly men's golf head coach Phil Lowe finds his club in second place after nearly two rounds of play in the season-opening Orange County Collegiate Classic on Monday.
On the 6,950-yard, par-72 Coto de Caza South Course, the Mustangs posted a four-person round of three-over-par 291 in the opening round and most players completed 15 or more holes before the second round was suspended due to darkness.
The second round will be completed Tuesday morning followed by the final 18 holes of play.
Redshirt freshman Nicholas Mok (pictured above) of Singapore is tied for third place with two other golfers at one under par. Mok has three holes remaining in his second round after carding a 70 in the opening round with five birdies and three bogeys.
Will Draper and Austin Liu are tied for sixth place with four other golfers at one over par. Both opened with 71s and both have three holes left to play before the final round. Liu is competing as an individual.
Also scoring for Cal Poly were Luke Adam, tied for 17th place at three over par with a 74 in the opening round; Tanner Podres, tied for 19th place at four over par after opening with a 76; and Dominick Hoover, tied for 23rd place at eight over par following an opening round of 77.
University of San Francisco golfers Soren Lind and Toby Briggs are 1-2 with 21 holes to play. Lind is four under par with an opening 68 while Briggs is three under par after opening with a 72.
When play was suspended, San Francisco led the seven-team field with a six-under-par total, 13 strokes ahead of the second-place Mustangs. Cal State Fullerton is another five shots back in third place.
Mok is third in the field of 47 golfers in par-3 scoring at one under par while Liu is seventh in par-4 scoring at one over par and tied for the lead in par-5 scoring at five under par.
Mok and Draper both carded an eagle Monday.
Mok opened his second round of play with a three on the 555-yard, par-5 sixth hole while Draper earned his eagle in the first round on the 533-yard par-5 18th hole with a three.
Draper is tied for first in pars with 25.
