Cal Poly Drops Two Spots to 12th Despite Better Score in Second Round

EL MACERO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly men's golf team shaved two strokes off Saturday's round, but still dropped two positions on the leader board at the El Macero Classic hosted by UC Davis at the El Macero Country Club.
Coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs carded a four-person 294 Sunday for a 14-over-par 590 total after 36 holes of play, slipping from 10th to 12th in the 15-team field.
Will Draper recorded a 71 and Luke Adam added a 72 for the Mustangs. Adam is tied for 29th place with his 146 total entering Monday's final round while Draper is in a tie for 64th place at 152. Draper posted three birdies and a pair of bogeys while Adam had three birdies and three bogeys.
Cal Poly's other scoring golfers are Austin Liu with a 75 for a 148 total and 41st place, Nicholas Mok with a 76 for a 47th-place tie and Joey Zambri with a 77 for a 153 total and 70th place.
Matthew Sutherland of Fresno State followed his 68 on Saturday with a 66 Sunday and moved into the lead at 134 on the 7,110-yard par-72 course. He is three shots ahead of first-round leader Ethan Farnam of Saint Mary's with 18 holes to play. Farnam added a 72 to his first-round 65.
Tommy Stephenson of Fresno State and Matt McCarty of Santa Clara share third place with 138 totals.
San Francisco shot from fourth place into the lead on the team leader board with a 277 total Sunday and a 562 aggregate for the tournament. The Dons lead Saint Mary's by four strokes with UC Davis and Fresno State sharing third place at nine under par.
Adam is tied for second in par-3 scoring at one under par and his seven birdies over 36 holes is in the top 20.
