Playing the first of five road games this season, Cal Poly (1-1) trailed San Jose State (1-2) 17-0 after the first quarter and 38-0 during the second before freshman Noah Serna converted a 24-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half.
Defensively, Mustang sophomore linebacker Ethan Calvert recorded a career high 12 tackles.
Cal Poly resumes action when hosting Lincoln University (Oakland, Calif.) on Saturday, Sept. 16. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital is 5:02 p.m.
San Jose State forced the Mustangs into two turnovers to start the matchup, first converting a kickoff fumble recovery into a 27-yard field goal from Kyler Halvorson before a second fumble recovery during Cal Poly's initial drive was turned into a 27-yard touchdown reception to tight end Sam Olson from quarterback Chevan Cordeiro.
The Spartans followed with a 10-yard touchdown run from Quali Conley to go up 17-0 with six minutes to play in the first quarter.
With Conley adding a second touchdown rush to open the second quarter, Cal Poly limited to 92 first-half yards and Cordeiro contributing a rushing touchdown before finding wide receiver Charles Ross for another score, the Mustangs faced the 38-0 deficit before finishing a 58-yard drive with Serna's 24-yard field goal.
Into the second half, San Jose State scored on its opening two drives before Matthew Coleman returned a Mustang punt 74 yards as the Spartans took a 59-3 lead into the fourth quarter. The punt return was first conceded by Cal Poly in seven years and the first produced by San Jose State in five seasons.
