Mustangs Edge Seattle, Fall to San Jose State at Silicon Valley Classic

SAN JOSE – Run-scoring singles from junior catcher Julia Barnett and sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza (above) during the top of the first inning provided the Cal Poly softball program the only lead of Friday's matchup with Seattle as the Mustangs began second-day action at the Silicon Valley Classic with a 3-1 victory against Redhawks. The Mustangs, however, closed play Friday by falling to co-host San Jose State by the same scoreline.
During Friday's opening victory against Seattle (3-5), Cal Poly (6-2) surged ahead at the first opportunity with Barnett and Garza stringing together successive one-out, run-scoring single to score junior center fielder Jessica Clements and senior shortstop Xiara Diaz.
Mustangs starting junior righthander Kate Judy (3-1) stranded the Seattle bases loaded to close the second before the Redhawks scratched across their only run in the third, halving Cal Poly's lead through a sacrifice fly from designated player Nicola Simpson.
Stranding baserunners in the third and fourth innings, Cal Poly added an insurance run in the top half of the sixth with senior designated player Mia Perez grounding out to score junior pinch runner Jade Contapay.
Judy, whose only run allowed was unearned, scattered seven hits in the victory.
During Friday's second matchup at San Jose State (3-4), the Mustangs scored in the top of the first once again with Garza singling home Diaz, who reached previously on a two-out Spartans fielding error.
San Jose State, however, equalized during the bottom half as first baseman Shay McDowell followed a double from left fielder Aubrie Thomas with a two-out, run-scoring single.
The Spartans then produced the decisive runs during the bottom of the third. After right fielder Taylor Squires singled with one down, Thomas drew a five-pitch walk from Mustang sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (1-1). Second baseman Reina Zermeno followed with a two-run triple to provide the eventual final margin of victory.
Stranding two baserunners during both the second and third innings, Cal Poly saw Clements lead off the fifth with a single. She then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Spartans starting righthander Mia Reynolds (1-3) struck out Diaz, forced Barnett into a lineout and induced a fly out from Garza to end the threat.
The Mustangs then stranded the final two of their 10 baserunners in the top of the seventh to close the matchup.
Cal Poly resumes Silicon Valley Classic action on Saturday, Feb. 17 with a 10 a.m. rematch against Seattle at Santa Clara.
